Day Pitney is committed to diversity and inclusiveness. We foster diversity within our firm and the communities we live in. Diversity is one of the firm's core values. We believe people of diverse skills, opinions, perspectives, lifestyles, ideas, thinking and knowledge make us a stronger, more productive law firm. We actively seek out people who distinguish themselves from the pack—people of diverse ethnicity, culture, race, national origin, age, religion, disabilities, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, political affiliation and veteran status.

Spearheading this commitment is the Executive Committee, the cross-office Diversity & Inclusion Committee and other key members of the firm. The Diversity & Inclusion Committee and staff are responsible for furthering the firm's diversity objectives and implementing the firm's diversity plan, which ensures the firm's focus on diversity as a core value. The members of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and staff serve as thought leaders, ambassadors and advocates on diversity, inclusion, and equity initiatives and issues.
While we are proud of what the firm has achieved over the years, we continue to build on those accomplishments. One of the ways we're doing this is through internal affinity groups such as Day Pitney Attorneys of Color (DPAC), which is a network comprising all attorneys of color throughout the firm and which aims to foster an inclusive environment that helps ensure the success of minority attorneys. Others are Women Working Together (WWT), which provides mutual support, professional growth and community service opportunities to women attorneys at the firm and to clients, and the Day Pitney Alliance, which provides an avenue for Day Pitney employees, regardless of sexual orientation or role within the firm, to express support for LGBTQ people, and promote awareness of and support for LGBTQ causes and concerns.
Additionally, we have established an LGBTQ Planning Group in our Individual Client practice group specifically designed to serve and support the LGBTQ community.
Internally at the firm we have a Heritage Month Speaker Series that brings in speakers to discuss topics of importance related to the various heritage month celebrations. We have hosted the former Senior Director of Diversity and Multi-Cultural Initiatives at the PGA of American to discuss the history of African-Americans in golf, an assistant attorney general, a member of the Hispanic National Bar Association task force created to raise awareness of the DREAM Act, a retired college professor to discuss the Emancipation Proclamation on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the first female president of a major bank in Connecticut, and a panel presentation on marriage equality.
These events are open to all employees at the firm and are broadcast live throughout all our offices.
Day Pitney also regularly sponsors and supports attendance at events put on by organizations dedicated to enhancing opportunities for minority lawyers and law students, such as the Boston Lawyers Group, the New Jersey Law Firm Group, the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, and various national and state minority bar associations. Day Pitney attorneys serve and have served in leadership positions in many of these organizations.
We are committed to working with our clients, professional colleagues, diversity organizations and others in the communities in which we practice as we pursue the common goal of a professional workplace where opportunity is available to all. We continue to strive to provide challenging opportunities, meaningful guidance and positive incentives to assist our professionals in achieving their greatest potential. In doing so, our goal is ultimately to create advantages from our differences and to achieve richer, broader and innovative results.
We invite you to explore Day Pitney's website to learn more about our efforts.
The Diversity & Inclusion Committee is a cross-office committee consisting of partners, counsel and associates from each of the major markets in which we practice. Also serving on the committee are the firm's Directors of Diversity & Inclusion, Professional Development, and Human Resources, the Chief Business Development and Marketing Officer, as well as the Chairs of Day Pitney Attorneys of Color (DPAC), Women Working Together (WWT) and Day Pitney Alliance. The committee is charged with helping to devise the diversity initiative strategy, supporting the Director of Diversity & Inclusion and ensuring support of the firm's diversity efforts both internally and externally. To learn more about the diversity initiative at Day Pitney, please contact any one of the committee members listed below.
Here is an overview of some of our recent community programs aimed at assisting individuals and organizations serving traditionally underserved populations:
In addition to the programs listed above, the firm's Summer Associates are also invited to organize community service efforts. The Summer Associates in each office traditionally choose a community service outreach program meaningful to them and dedicate their time to the community at-large.
In large part due to efforts such as these Day Pitney continues to make great strides in supporting diversity initiatives in our neighborhoods.
Day Pitney lawyers formed the Day Pitney Attorneys of Color (DPAC) in the fall of 2010. Through DPAC, Day Pitney not only provides a venue for attorneys of color to exchange ideas and share their experiences but also accelerates attainment of the professional and business development goals of its members through mentorship, the annual DPAC retreat and various DPAC-sponsored events throughout the year.
DPAC's mission is to
DPAC meetings are bimonthly and enable DPAC members to meet and interact with attorneys of color across Day Pitney's offices. During these meetings, DPAC members discuss the issues of the day and plan officewide and community events and initiatives. Additionally, DPAC holds an annual professional and business development retreat, during which DPAC hosts a dinner for the firm's Executive Committee and leadership to discuss how DPAC and the firm can work together to sustain and strengthen the firm's diversity initiative.
The DPAC membership consists of attorneys at all levels of experience from all Day Pitney's offices. This diversity of experience facilitates informal mentorship between DPAC members in the areas of professional development and both internal and external business development. The interaction between firm leadership and DPAC creates its own mentoring opportunities. DPAC also provides business and professional development opportunities by leveraging national cultural celebrations and incorporating business development efforts into such programs. In addition, DPAC supports its members' professional development by supporting various networking activities, as described below.
DPAC encourages its members not only to participate in community organizations and affinity bar groups but also to seek and hold leadership positions in such organizations. Through DPAC and Day Pitney support, DPAC members attend various events and conferences throughout the year geared toward building relationships, mentoring, and facilitating professional and business development.
DPAC encourages its members to serve in groups and organizations committed to community service and to aiding the less fortunate, particularly those in disadvantaged communities. DPAC organized a firmwide clothing drive, for example, which was featured in the New Jersey Law Journal and the Connecticut Law Tribune, and which resulted in a Day Pitney donation of more than 200 items of business clothing to the Hartford Job Corps in Connecticut and Dress for Success Hudson County in New Jersey.
