David Newman Discusses DOJ Suit into Airline Merger with Media

Publisher: Reuters
August 14, 2013

David Newman recently discussed the stalled U.S. Airways and American Airlines merger with various media outlets. "The government has a very good argument" in its case against the proposed merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines, he told Reuters, because past mergers of major airlines have not resulted in reduced prices for passengers. The airlines argue that the merger would allow them to compete against those other players in the market, and the merger had been set to finalize in September. David told The Street that the proposed airline merger "is just another example of an industry which believes it has to consolidate to survive." Fox Business quoted him: "The government is using the lawsuit as leverage to try and negotiate better merger terms so at least it looks as though the consumer is coming away with some benefits."
