Jed Davis was quoted in an article, “Phantom Arrest Shows Tech Cos. Must Police Own Products,” published by Law360. The article addresses the potential risks to makers of secure wireless telecommunications systems, whose products, though usually designed for legitimate privacy needs, may nonetheless be exploited by users to evade law enforcement. According to the article, last month, the CEO of Phantom Secure was arrested and law enforcement seized thousands of the company’s highly encrypted smartphones and shut down the sealed-off network that Phantom Secure has allegedly marketed to narcotics traffickers and other criminals. “This was an extraordinary case involving extraordinary defendants who allegedly agreed to sell wares for criminal enterprises,” Davis told Law360. He continued, “There are ripples coming out of this case that people who sell equipment need to be mindful and know who they’re dealing with.”
