International tax partner Von Sanborn was quoted in an article, "Six Family Offices Themes Likely to Set the Agenda in 2019," published by Fund Intelligence. The article discusses current trends and developments among the family office and high net worth community, including impact investing, wealth transfers, and qualified opportunity zones.
Sanborn, a member of the firm's Family Office practice, told Fund Intelligence "Once the applicable regulations are more fleshed out, we are likely going to see a significant amount of investment being made in qualified opportunity zone funds to take advantage of the tax benefits, which essentially are the deferral of tax on capital gains invested in opportunity zones until 2026 and the potential for no tax on the appreciation thereafter." He continued, "People selling real estate or other illiquid assets such as art will be moving to these funds. It will be a thoughtful allocation not just a decision point on deferring tax."
