GC Compensation: 'Working Really, Really Hard,' and Getting Paid Well

Publisher: New Jersey Law Journal

Tommy Shi was quoted in an article, "GC Compensation: 'Working Really, Really Hard,' and Getting Paid Well," published in the New Jersey Law Journal. The article discusses that compensation for top lawyers at New Jersey-based publicly held companies remains strong, with more women at the top of the publication's compensation list than in years past. Shi, the director of diversity and inclusion at Day Pitney, told the New Jersey Law Journal that numbers, whether in terms of compensation or headcount, don't mean everything.

"Increasingly, clients are really asking for more data … really diving deep into the law firms they use," Shi said, adding that numbers "are just the tip of the iceberg" for any organization, while the culture and processes are most important. "The question is, what do they [the clients] do with those numbers?" Shi said, adding that law firms would benefit from "a two-way street" where clients explain how they're evaluating law firms' diversity metrics, as well as feedback: "here's how we think you should improve." He added, "The more we discuss D&I, it's a positive thing."
