Sylvia-Rebecca "Becky" Gutiérrez, a litigator, regularly represents corporations in product liability, torts, creditors' rights and real estate litigation. Her experience includes defending manufacturers in mass tort personal injury suits alleging asbestos or other toxic exposure. Becky also represents high net worth individuals in matrimonial matters.
Becky also represents companies in traditional labor law and employment litigation. She assists employers during union election campaigns, arbitrations, in matters before the National Labor Relations Board, and in strike injunction proceedings. Becky also represents employers in defense of litigation filed by current and former employees.
Before joining Day Pitney, Becky served as law clerk to the Honorable Carmen Messano, then Deputy Presiding Judge of the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey. Her previous experience also includes international tax consulting at a Big Four accounting firm on the in-bound and out-bound taxation issues of multinational corporations and a clerkship at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Boston Region of the General Counsel's Office.
Becky contributed research to and assisted with the editing of the New Jersey Federal Civil Procedure, New Jersey Law Journal Press, 2014, 2015 and 2016 editions; the New Jersey Federal Practice Rules, Gann Law Books, 2009 edition; Law as Justice: The Moral Imperative of Owen Fiss's Scholarship, by Irwin Stotzky, Twelve Tables Press, 2009; and Large-Scale Ecosystem Restoration: Five Case Studies from the United States, edited by Mary Doyle and Cynthia Drew, Island Press, 2008.
Becky's community involvement includes pro bono advice and representation to a variety of members of the Morris and Hudson County communities as part of SCARC, an organization serving people with developmental disabilities, and the Battered Women's Legal Advocacy Project. She is fluent in Spanish.
